Organizing A Vocabulary Notebook .

It is advisable to keep a personal vocabulary notebook . There is no one correct way to organize a vocabulary notebook . Here are some possibilities and examples .

1-] Organizing words by meaning :

Try dividing your notebook into different broad sections , with sections for words for ‘feelings’ , words to ‘describe places’ , words for ‘movements’ , words for ‘thinking’ etc. . In each section      you can build families of words related in meaning , using some of the ways suggested before .

2-] Using various types of diagrams :

Words that can be grouped under a heading or a more general word can be drawn as a     tree-diagram .

A bubble notebook is also useful , since you can make it grow in whatever directions you want it to .

3- ] Organizing by word-class :

You can start doing this by writing the words depending on if they are verbs or nouns or adjectives or phrases in different colors . For example , if they are verbs in black , and blue if they are nouns . If the translation is used , it is written in another color . Drawing pictures is also possible .

 verb noun adjective person
produce production productive producer
industrialize industry industrial
export exportation exporting  exporter
help help helpful  helper
advise advice advisable adviser
rely ( on ) reliance reliable
comfort comfort comfortable

4-] Synonyms or antonyms of words :

When you find a synonym or an antonym of a word you already have in your notebook enter it next to that word .

e.g. stop = cease [ ‘cease’ is more formal than ‘stop’ ]     urban X rural
