Degrees Of Comparison

1 . We form the degree of comparison of most adjectives by adding (-er) - comparative or

(-est) to the positive degree - superlative .

long	longer	longest
narrow	narrower	narrowest
strong	stronger	strongest
bright	brighter	bright

Example

Ali is tall.

Nasser is taller than Ali .

Mohammad is the tallest .

2 . Change (Y) to ( -ier or - iest )

easy		easier	easies
happy		happier	happiest
lazy		lazier	laziest

Example

He is lazier than his brother .

Their sister is the laziest

3 . Double the last letter with the following adjectives :

thin	thinner	thinnest
hot	hotter	hottest

sad	sadder	saddest

Example

Sally is thin .

Nancy is thinner than Sally .

Diana is the thinnest .

4 . Use ( more / most ) before long ( with more than one syllable ) adjectives.

5 . The following adjectives have different forms :

Examples

Ahmad’s garden is good .

Ahmad’s garden is better than Hassan’s .

Mohammad’s garden is the best .

6 . Equality is expressed by [ as … adjective …. as ]

Negative is expressed by [ not so …. adjective …. as ]

Examples

She is as old as her brother .

It isn’t hot today as it was yesterday .

French isn’t as difficult as Chinese .
